Preparations for learning events

Yesterday we were introduced to our assigments for next few days. This week we are incorporating strategies and techniques we have learnt in LATINA into our own educational projects. We were divided into groups. Vera, Yulia and I are in the group named Communication and marketing group. At first, it wasn´t all that clear to me how will my topic (Assertive communication) connect to marketing topics, but we managed to find transitions points from one to another theme. I found a lot of material on my topic since I think assertivenes has become a popular term with development of popular pshicology. There are many scientific and popular articles on this subject. I also though of a clip that i recently ran into on Youtube that I could use in my presentation as a motivation for group discussion.

I´m really looking forward to our presentations.

Learning and teaching

Presentations of our triggers went very well. Considering the time we had, and lack of our experience with working with camera, and film editing softver, I think we were very succesfull and supportive of each other.

Group discussion on reasons and methods of teaching (and learning) followed the presentations. Again, the culture (shock) difference came into attention. While discussing the reasons why we enetered the teaching profession, Daniel said that his country has had, and stills has, very high number of illiterate and uneducated poeple and he felt someone had to make something about it. His reasons for becoming a teacher in so many ways surpasses every possible noble reasons I could think of from mine experience. This task was learning experience on much deeper level because I got to see teaching profession in the brightest form of it´s mission-changing the world around us.

We finished with discussion on open ended questions. This was very usefull because we gave examples from our own experience on how to finish the lecture, precisely how to motivate students to ask us (and them selves) questions. I liked the idea of giving students a taks to talk among them selves what they didn´t understand from the lecture and than share their questions with everyone else. Also, we posed the touchy question of not knowing the right answer (teachers are also limited humans. 🙂 and what to do in such situations. Strategy of “returning the ball” seems to work the best. In other words, giving students task to find the right answer for their homework or the next lecture.

I think this kind of discussions based on our teaching experiences can be very helpfull in developing our teaching techniques.

Archives, Libraries and Museums

Today learning experience was dinamic in a different kind of way, it included few locations; National Library and ABM-utvikling (Norwegian Authority for Archives, Library and Museum). We took a short tour through the library building which was restored in 2005. It was very interesting to hear that brother of Gustav Vigeland painted the cupola of the library. We were shorty introduced to the library history. Besides in Oslo, library is located in Mo i Rana, city in the north of Norway. I found that to be very unusual since it is ONE library whose collections are located hounderds (or thousands) of kilometars away. We were also introduced to future tendencies of which the “digitazing everything” seemed the most challenging and promising at the same time. Although the library had a digital collection before, from 2006. the initiative to digitize all of it´s collection was given. At this point library has a collection of “28 kilometars of shelved book”, in words of a librarian who was guiding us throug the library. The oldest book that library has in it´s collection dates from 12th century and besides that, incunabulas are also among the most valuable items National library has. It is also interesting that the library is building a repository by downloading Norwegian web sites. It seemes the library has enetered the future of librarianship through big doors of building digital library that will be a digital copy of physical one, and more.

The Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority was presented to us by a former direcor of a Folks museum. ABM-utvikling was established in 2003. as an organisation that connects archives, libraries and museums and is aimed at strengthening their colaboration and position in the society. During the presentation many ABM cultural projects were brought into attention. What was interesting to me was the nature of these projects- many of them have a mission of preserving culture of Norway´s minorities.

After the visit and coming back to OUC we had a short discussion about the difference between the library, museum and archive. Some revealing ideas were given that I think many people aren´t familiar with. For example, museums are usually thought of as cultural institutions that hold historical objects. But we came to the conslusion that musems can also have a contemporary exibitions, present art or science objects and themes. In that sense, there are three types of museums: historical, art and science museums. Unfortunately, there wasn´t much time for the discussion to develop but general information was given.

In the end of the day, my group (this time me included) managed to work in the editing room in program Pinacle on our trigger, as I had hoped we/I would. Although it is a lot more complex than any program I had every worked with, it reminded me of Adobe Audition, program that I use for recording and editing music, and that made it more easy for me to use.

Our trigger is finished and I´m trully looking forward to tomorrow morning and our film premiers!

Making a trigger

Today we got a chance to use smartboard  (it was the first time for me to write on it) and see other functions it has. For example, saving the text you enter on the board. As yesterday we began with group presentations: we presented our storyboards in groups. As I have stressed out yesterday, and have a need to do it again since I find it to be a very good approach, group presentations allow us to see ideas of other groups, make comparative analysis and maybe make our own ideas more clear to us. I think ideas begin shaping into reality the moment we start verbalizing them.

Most of the working day was spent in filming the video that would later,in editing room, become a trigger. For me, it was a multilearning experience: I got a chance to operate the camera for the first time in my life, to think throug filming strategies, direct and see film editing room. Unfortunately, I didn´t get a chance to work in film editing program since I was searching web for the appropriate music for our video while the group was with technical assistants turning the raw film material into trigger. But I hope to see how it works tomorrow.

Although it was multilearning experience, I think we, first of all, had a lot of fun. 🙂 And I think we made a good job.

Up to triggers and triggers

Begining the working day with the presentations of our digital stories worked very well for us; we got information about what we have done succesfully and the aspects that need some finishing touches. Althoug I think we could have given a more effort to comment on other gruop´s work, it was excellent to hear other people´s objective opinions of our work.

Trigger is a term that I haven´t been even familiar with. Concept of making a trigger seemed rather complicated, and still seems. 🙂 It takes a lot of imagination and strategic thinking to make a good and effective storyboard.
Practical instructions that Aslak gave us were helpfull to set the story in technically reasonable frames.

Again, we are “forced” to think, to imagine, to let our imagination free and be creative. That´s what we profit the most of.

Monday 30th of June in LATINA

What was this monday about? Digital story is the answer! Digital stories open new dinamic grounds for learning and teaching.

Recently I have learnt how to use Windows Movie Maker. Since it is very similar to Photo Story 3, technically it was quite easy to use, but making a story that has a logical structure and trying to make a clear point was quite challenging and motivating. Since Photo Story 3 is easy to use, I think working with this programm in class would be not just a learning experience, but also a fun one. 🙂

Another thing that I would like to stress out is teaching approach in LATINA. I feel I am learning not just about the possible application of media in class, but also methodology of teaching. Practical and creative work that we take part in every day is extremely motivating, for one part, and very efficient on the other. Another thing is group work. Althoug it is sometimes hard to work with people you don´t know, who have different interests and backgrounds than you, it is an excellent opportunity for learning about ourseleves, our communication skills and ability to cooperate.
